1938 ES2 exhaust fitting

Forums

Today I got home and my new pipe was here from Armours. I wrote to them some time ago and was told they do a special pipe for a 38 ES2. This was after getting one from Feked that was bent upwards in the wrong place, (forward of kickstart moulding in gearbox instead of behind) and was fouling on gearbox.

So I tried fitting the one from Armours and it was a bit deeper in depth from exhaust port in head to the bend at bottom where it starts to head rearwards. It turnred out to be to far. I then realised the number stamped on it N19R was for a Model 19 which if I am correct is a taller engine isn't it ? I rang Armours and the guy confirmed that yes they had sent me a pipe for a Model 19 and this was to give me plenty of clearance below the kickstart moulding in gearbox. Now it seems there is no special pipe for my 38 ES2 !! He told me to just bend the flange to adjust the pipe to where it fits. However if I sit the pipe where it should be roughly, the flange is really not square with the seat in the head at all. It's hard to tell but it must be at least 5 mm out on one side. You would have to bend the pipe as well I reckon. I mean the flange on the pipe is only 2-3mm wide at the most. I thought maybe if I stacked two or even three of those copper exhaust pipe sealing rings in, fitted exhaust and then tightend up the flange nut last it might bed in ok. Maybe if I get it up to operating temperature and tighten more it might help to bend flanges on pipe to right position. Has anyone had any experience with this same problem and some advise or diiferent solution ?

Most people on the WD bike scene ask Armours to supply unplated and then reckon on a bit of tweaking before dull chroming or whatever.

In my opinion, if you stress the flange then you'll have problems. If you don't have a specialist close who can adjust the bend, then the best bet is a bit of careful cutting and welding to arrive at an unstressed line that starts and finishes at the correct place.

Unfortunately, Norton varied the height of the silencer inlet several times and companies such as Armours will only have trial-fitted to one bike at most.
