I need some help please. I've just taken ownership of a 1928 Model 18, in original condition and am re-commissioning it ready for the road i.e. new tyres / tubes and brake linings. But the oil pump drips and I would like to identify the make and model of the pump so that I can hopefully source some spares.
Hopefully the attached photo shows the pump for someone to identify.
Whilst checking the Amal carb I found the float chamber was full (seized float) of white crystals, which I've managed to clean out, but I need a new filter for the bottom of the float chamber; does anyone know if these are available?
Thanks, Phil.
It's a Best and Lloyd…

i was reading a thread as I am trying to manufacture a magneto sprocket to drive a B&L oil pump, do you have some drawings of the pump perhaps ? I would appreciate it if you could help.

These are currently being remade - see www.vintage-replica.cz - and individual parts can also be bought.

Best and Lloyd parts available
Alan,
That's wonderful news that parts are still being made and a good selection of parts for the older machines. I'll dismantle mine and see what bits I need.
Thanks, Phil.

Hi Philip, Here's a couple…
Hi Philip,
Here's a couple of schematics of the pump from my Best and Lloyd catalogue. If you want any more please let me know.

Oil Pump drive
Hi Nigel,
It's not the magneto sprocket which drives the oil pump but the nut screwed on to the end of the exhaust cam. The nut is slotted to take the rectangular drive shaft of the pump.
A couple of photos from the parts book and sales catalogue attached. If you enlarge the parts page you can just make out the slot on the nut.

Dimensioned drawings for B&L pump
Has anyone made and precise dimensioned drawings for the Best and Lloyd Mk 2 oil pump?
My pump has cracked where the feed pipeline union screws into the Mazak body, so I'm considering getting one made. To do this I need an engineering drawing that has accurate dimensions, especially for the axes of the drilling or boring positions.
I can draw this accurately, but need these crucial dimensions for the driving worm to engage perfectly with the driven gear. My son has 3D scanned the pump body and priced up for 3D printing in aluminium, but this works out the same cost as the complete new pump from the Czech Republic i.e. £400.
If I can get this drawing into CAD format then it would be possible to get one or more made using CNC machinery.

I can recommend pump from vintage replica.
The vintage replica pump is fine.
I have one on my 24 model 18
You can just buy the body from them separately.
You don't need to buy the complete pump.

175 euros for new body in brass
The body only from Vintage replica is 175Euros.
I found quality is OK although definition on the old patent numbers etc could have been better.
In the absence of an alternative then I'd recommend.

Pump body supplier
Stephen,
That's very useful and will save a lot of time.
Did you buy your replacement before we left the EU? I may have to consider import taxes, or is it tariffs!

Oil pump body and import duty
Yes I bought mine before the disaster of Brexit but the charges are just part of our lives now.
The company themselves are brilliant to deal with and used to come to Stafford shows in the past.

Vintage Replica pump
The pump body has been ordered and is on it's way. The total cost of pump body and new pipework connections, including Paypal charge for payment and post is £165. At least I can get my Model 18 running again.
I still think it's a good idea to capture any technical information for important parts in case they have to be made, especially as the market shrinks as owners stop riding and wearing their bikes out!

It's a Best and Lloyd Mechanical Mark II and looks like it has a plunger fitted to show the oil is circulating.
Same as my 1928 Model 18. Can attach catalogue drawings if they will assist.
