After seeing your post my curiosity started me down a pre-war Norton rabbit hole of online image searches.  Looks like a rod (maybe 1/8 in diameter) curls around back corner of engine case, travels below pivot point of exhaust lifter arm, and stays situated between lifter arm and engine case headed forward towards exhaust valve.  I haven’t seen a clear picture of where it terminates though.  No idea what it’s function might be either.  Possibly a tension spring as it looks like it might ride against forward portion of lifter arm pivot.

I will cite Bonham’s Autumn 2019 Stafford Sale of a 1925 16H with swallow sidecar as a decent visual reference of the rod in place.

Good luck hope that helps you out

Thanks a lot for Your very helpfull information. I think the long rod acts as a spring

to hold down the valve lifter. May there was no coil spring around the lifter cable in these

day.

I´ll find out.
