16H misfire

Forums

I doubt if there is a magic bullet out there but maybe..

My 16H is on the road. Ran well for the first few miles once the carb pilot jet galleries were cleaned out. Now it starts easily, ticks over ridiculously slowly on full retard, but misfires slightly most of the time when on the road. I've a horrible feeling it might be magneto related. It was refurbed by Brightspark last year. I've lifted and lowered the needle through all the options and now it's back in the middle where it belongs; and made sure the pilot galleries are all clean. There isn't a lot more I can do with the carb. Maybe carbon brushes inside mag...earth brush is a bit short but looks OK for now. Better look at the HT pickup now the motor's cooled down...

Tried three different plugs. New copper plug leads; properly gapped etc. Magic wand required...

Maybe the timing has slipped. yet another check

Sorry about the above - writing it down concentrates the mind. The magneto contact blade was twisted slighlty clockwise so must have a) jammed slightly on the guide beside it and b) upset the timing.

Now at last it's going properly - Hurray!

Worth checking for end float on the armature as face cam points will vary timing wildly if there is too much. Pull and push on points/ More than a thou or two is too much. Hope you get it sorted

Check your carb. If the carb has any grooves marks etc in the slide they effect the running as one minute its mixture is right, then its too weak, then too rich as the slide barrel moves in the guide, its all down to no lubricating properties in fueland the goverments obsession with bloody methanol!! (try adding those lead beads to the tank they do work, you need lubrication). I had exactly the same snag on a 1946 model 18. Put on a new carb and hey presto cured.... don't mess about refurb as you want a methanol proof new AMAL. Ring Surrey cycles they will sort you out.
