16H electrics

Forums

Hello I have had my 16h in the road for years and the electrics have always worked well, I have a modern AO services regulator fitted and the standard dynamo. I have fitted a break light switch to the rear light, the problem I have now is, if the brake is pressed the light works fine, when the engine is running and the break is applied my ammeter needle goes over quite a way into the plus side and drops back to the centre when the pedal is released, can anyone let me know if this is normal. All the lights work fine and the bike is charging okay. Cheers Kelvin.

I presume that you have correctly wired the brake switch direct to the battery, not through the amp meter, therefore the amp meter is showing the current required toreplace what you are drawing out from the battery. On 6volts, the stop lamp will draw 3 amps approx. All my bikes do the same!

Hello Paul, I have the break light wired up as follows. I have a wire coming from the negative side of the battery, though the switch, which is insulated. A wire comes out of the switch up to the break light bulb wire. It works fine, but I thought when it was pressed the ammeter should have gone into the negative side on the ammeter, if I have the bike ticking over and turn the lights on the needle goes into the negative reading, until it's given a few more revs. I am just trying to see why I am blowing a few bulbs every couple of months and thought the break light might have been the problem, or maybe it's because it's a bone shaker.

cheers Kelvin.

G'da Kelvin, the amp meter won't show a discharge because the brake light isn't wired through it! The charging circuit is wired through the meter, and that is why you see the needle over in the + 've.when you turn on the brake light. Checkall your connections and ensure the battery is in good nick. It wouldn't hurt to check the voltage across the battery terminalswith a meter while the engine is revvingat riding speed, to ensure the electronic regulator outputvoltage isn't too high.

Vibration kills light filaments especially when they are illuminated, thats why I like to fit LED's in my tail lamps. Fit and forget!enlightened

Hello Paul thank you for your help, looks like my bike is fine then. The bulbs that are prone to blowing are the front side light and the speedo light. I am unsure if these are available in LED, I will have a look around.

Lots of LED pilot and tail options here;

I'm running a LED pilot in my 6 volt ES2, equivalent to a claimed 10 watts, and an LED speedo 9BA9s fitment that really illuminates the clock but doesn't cause it to steam up in this cold weather.

I also run a LED lightboard stop/tail at the back end, all of the above add up to reliability but no real consumption- releasing more chuff for the headlight!

6 and 12 volt available on Goffys site, but there's more choice if your bike has a NEG earth system.

Lightboard quite small, mines fitted into a L529 rear light on a couple of small 3mm pins supplied with it.

The tails to connect are quite short I recall, so solderered onto longer lengths of wire to connect.

You can return to original if you require it later.

Good result and well worthwhile with modern traffic conditions!

I have just replaced my (6 volt) 15mm bayonet cap bulbs for pilot light, instrument panel and rear light (tail+brake+number plate) - no 'light board' to rewire - just a straight swap. My brake lamp is run through the ammeter - it hardly flickers now. Classic Dynamo & Regulator Conversions advertise they are about to bring in a headlamp with main + dip although apparently these must be adjusted with care because they have a poor beam pattern (light sourcs is too big for accurate focus).

Hello I have ordered and received my new led bulbs today, they look great and are very bright. Had I not been so rough and managed to break one the job would have been perfect, thank you for all the info.

Cheers Kelvin.
