16H clutch mismatch

Forums

I'm trying to put my 194116H clutch together - the bike's a basket-case, so some of this is guesswork. The originalbasket appears to be from a later bike as it has more clutch plates than it should have. I managed to purchase the correct part from the Club spares (part 3337).

However, the rollers, clutch centre and basket don't meet. As you can see from the photo, the cage and rollers overhang the rear clutch centre cover (pic 3). The cage and rollers alsosit proud of the cover surfaces(which I assume should bolt up hard against the back plate), thus trapping the cage (pic 2). There's also a 1-2mm gap around the rollers where they should touch the basket (pic 1).

Can someone tell me how many rollers should there be and what size? The manuals/parts books are no help.

Is there a WD clutch centre/rear cover that differs from the one I have?

I suspect it's just a mismatch of different ages of 16H clutch, but I can't find any dimensions or details to help.

Thanks,

Fiona

That doesn't look like a WD16H clutch drum...On the WD clutch, all the friction blocks have the same orientation - wide on the outside, narrow in the middle. The 16H drum has an internal bearing surface with a diameter of 3.75".

I don't understand why the bearing is too wide except perhaps that the later clutches had a plain drum with friction material on the back plate. This clutch was used up until the Atlas / Mercury. It's interchangeable as a unit but not all the components can be mixed and matched.

I don't have a complete spare clutch apart to measure.

Sounds like the old BSA or Triumph rollers have slipped in there conundrum. I recall finding out a number of years ago that there were different interpretations of "1/4in" rollers" in Birmingham!

The bearing surface is 3.75" on the new basket.

I have a basket which came with the clutch, which has all the friction pads the same way round, but it's deeper and the bearing surface looks as though it's been welded to reduce the diameter (now 3.563"). I can fit the whole clutch together using that, but if 3.75" is correct, that would suggest that the centre is wrong.

Do you know what the diameter of the centre is? Mine's 3.725". Thanks.
