Just when I thought we were there the speedo gives up the ghost and the rear wheel refuses to rotate backwards. I've removed the speedo drive (courtesy of the "quickly detachable" rear wheel) and find that the two lugs on the inner ring don't really want to move very much. The whole thing looks un-dismantable. Two questions for the experts: Is it possible to dismantle the drive? If not where's the best place for a replacement? Out of interest the following is printed round the edge of the drive unit. Ratio 2:1, BG5330/31. Also I note that the driven speedo cable leaves the drive on the underside whereas the spares book shows it leaving at the top. It can, of course, only fit one way. I'm just querying whether I have the correct unit? Thanks as usual for all your input.

Yep. It's a 2:1 as I noted, Boo. The speedo worked fine until it suddenly stopped so a round, bottom outlet, is obviously the correct one. It's just that all the spares lists show a top outlet. I'm also interested to know if they are capable of being dismantled.

The 2:1 ratio speedometer drive gear box is for the chronometric instruments, they can be dismantled, but if you reverse the ends to make it a top drive unit, this will also reverse the cable drive.
Later drive units have a slightly different ratio for the magnetic units.

I see that the drive (or a very similar one) is available from the NOC shop but requires a spacer or bush that the shop does not sell. Does anyone have any idea what size this item should be and where to purchase it?

My commando one sheared the two little lugs off last week. I dismantled it and replaced the rotating ring from a spare I had. To dismantle it you prize out the ring with the drive ratio written on it. This should pop out quite easily with a screwdriver. Then drill out the four 1/16" C/Sunk rivets. The retaining inner ring will then come out.you can then remove the drive ring.
If you want to fully dismantle it, the cable drive part is held in with two brass ends. These are an interference fit and are quite difficult to remove without damaging the main body for the drive unit.

Thanks Paul. I might try that to have a spare as I've now ordered one from RGM plus a "top hat" insert. Just awaiting delivery and hope it all fits - and works! They obviously were not made to repairable. George

You can get top and bottom outlet speedo drives. The one you need is I think a 2:1 ratio. there are two types, rounded type, like the Commando and the square type as on the earlier models.
I know from too much experience that the Commando type can be absolute crap quality. I went through three in six months at one time.
I you get the wrong sort, ie, bottom outlet then the speedo will go in reverse, as mine did when I got it first, some professionals eh?
