961 - No Rear Brake

Hi all,

Ist ride this year on my 2017 961 and when applying the rear brake nothing happened, the pedal bottoms out and absolutely no brake effect.

I had a spongy brake which was sorted at the 1st service, this was put down to air in the system from intial build, apparently it was a known issue because the brake pipes go up in to the ABS module under the seat and sometimes air gets trapped. Anyway before it was laid up last year the rear brake was fine, now i have no rear brake.

Before attempting this (as there is no Norton Service available at the moment) i need to know if i will get any ABS issues after bleeding the rear brake as i remember the Norton technician said the ABS had to be reset (presumably by software). The ABS is the Continental system.

The bike has only just over a 1000 miles on the clock.

Can anyone give me any advice please ?

Kind regards,

Ian

On my 2017 961, I have suffered no back brake twice - the second time was after winter layup last year. My dealer Teasdales said the upside down rear Brembo caliper on Aprilias also suffer from this - I think the factory are aware of the problem - may be due to the proximity of the ABS brake pipes to the exhaust & affecting the brake fluid. They replaced the fluid with Motul RBF 600 Synthetic DOT4 racing fluid. Seemed to work OK last year (just over 2k miles, but haven't yet been out on the bike this year - will let you know what happens.

The factory now seem to be taking parts orders & booking in for servicing so you could also contact them.

Thanks Alan,

Sounds just like mine, did the bike have to be plugged in to software to reset the ABS ?

Thats what i was told last time it was at the factory.

Kind regards,

Ian

I don't think it needs ABS reset - no mention of it in the Euro4 manual, which reads like a non- ABS system regarding fluid change - you could drop a message on the Access Norton board to confirm or contact the factory

Thanks Alan,

Sounds like a plan. Have a good weekend and stay safe.

Kind regards,

My 2019 916 sport came out of winter storage & was exactly the same. It was serviced last week by Krazy Horse ( who are great by the way) and they all do it - it just needs bleeding.

Ian, maybe a good idea to join the American forum AccessNorton. They have a lot more info on the Donington Nortons

Hi I have a 961 2018 cafe racer anniversary model.  I've had problems with the rear brake being spongy .I found after bleeding the rear brake. try wedgin the rear brake so it's prest down for two days and the air bubbles should be crushed under pressure. then pumping the rear brake pedal should go heard again works for me

Following my above comments, I still suffer from lack of pressure when my 2017 bike (with ABS) has not been used for some time. I now put the back brake pedal under pressure, with a few pumps, apply a strap & leave it like that - it seems to squeeze out the air & I have pressure back after a couple of days. It's just like old times in getting the last bit of air out of the system. I haven't had to rebleed it. I have spoken to Stuart Bodycote (our 961 guru) and there appears to be no solution - he thinks it is something to do with the ABS unit but they never got it sorted at the factory before it closed.

Some ABS units are self bleeding, but to self bleed they must be active and forcing the brakes on and off.
