Exhaust Valve Lifter

Forums

Having replaced the cable, the spindle inside the rockerbox no longer connects with the rocker arm. How do I re connect it?

Bring the piston up to tdc on the compression stroke (both valves closed). Slacken the pinch bolt on the operating arm. Using the screwdriver slot on the end of the spindle rotate the spindle clockwise until it just contacts the rocker, then back it off slightly to create some clearance. Retighten the pinch bolt. If it has been set up correctly there should be a 2 stage action on the valve lifter lever. Ist stage is taking up the clearance between spindle and rocker against the light pressure of the cable return spring. 2nd stage is opening the valve against the valve spring pressure. As mentioned previously very little movement of the exhaust valve is needed. As soon as there is any movement of the valve compression will be lost.

Bring engine to top of compression stroke.

1. Ensure that the ball end of the cable is seated into the operating lever at the handlebar and

that the outer cable is seated into the fixed end of the handlebar lever assembly.

2. Insert outer cable into the fixing on the head and the cable inner into the arm

3. Pull almost all of the slack out of cable and tighten cable clamp

4. Check for proper operation by operating the decompression lever and kicking the engine start lever. (Pull off the sparkplug wire so engine will not start)

5. If the compression is not relieved, loosen the cable clamp at the decompressor arm and raise the decompressor arm a very little and re-tighten the clamp.

6. Try #4 again

7. Repeat until satisfied that that the adjustment is correct.

8. Take out spark plug and kick the engine over. Observe the decompressor arm. There should be no movement when the engine is  running.

I am sure that if my procedure is not proper I will be chastised properly and a correct procedure will be forthcoming.

Thanks everybody. Being a civil engineer I'm much happier with cast concrete and jack hammers but will try the gentle approach. But there again Nortons are unapproachable.
