Model 50 Engine Out

The "Maintenance Manual and Instruction Book" ('57/'58 models), Section 29 says (after removing all the peripheral bits)

"Remove front and rear engine plates completely. Remove engine cradle bolts and lift engine clear of frame."

There should be no need to remove the gearbox or centre stand.

Sorry Mike, I had assumed single down tube frame. I don't have any info or practical experience of featherbed models so over to someone else?

Hi Mike

You have to remove the oil tank and toolbox first, then take out the engine and gearbox as a unit with the engine plates. Also release the mainstand spring.

With the featherbed twins, it's the bottom stud on the rear engine plates that stops you getting the engine out without disturbing the gearbox. I think it's the same on the singles. The workaround is to cut the holes in the engine plates for the bottom stud into slots. Once the nuts are loosened, the engine will lift out. Of course, you have to get the engine and gearbox out first to get to the engine plates to make this mod. It does make any engine work in future much easier.
