I have a 1958 Dominator which I rebuilt in 1998 and received an age related number. My recollection last year is that it was taxed without an MOT as it falls into an Exempted Class (pre 1960). I have just retaxed it without MOT certificate using the www.gov.uk/taxdisc website. However, the tax reminder form states that this vehicle 'needs and appropriate MOT Test Certificate' and I note that there is a form you can fill in to claim exemption (which I have never done). Can anyone advise whether I need an MOT Certificate or completed exemption form (V112G)for this vehicle whether or not it is taxed?

V112G will enable you to tax it at the post office. Online you may succeed if you click "yes" on the question "do you have an MOT for the vehicle?" so long as your MOT has expired! (You couldn't make it up). You need to ask yourself whether an MOT might give you peace of mind, and what your insurer might do if you had an accident. The whole thing is crazy, and I suspect that when tax discs are phased out next winter we old bike owners will be frozen out in some new bureaucratic ploy.
