Laydown gearbox

Hello,

Just finished putting in 3 new bearings on our 1952 ES2 lay down gear box, and have a good 16th of an inch end float on the main shaft which goes out to the sprocket,

can some body please tell me the way to shimand take up the end float, and which end .

Just to be certain, we have to know what part has too much end float as youseem tobe naming the parts incorrectly....

Withreference to the drawing:

The Main shaft (1) has the clutch on the end of it....

The Sleeve gear (13) has the gearbox sprocket (31) on it....

So what part needs shimming?

The gearbox sprocket is pulled up tight to the bearing on the outside with the Sleeve gear pulled up tightly on the other side of the bearingso no end float can exist.

The main shaft has a washer/shim (78) next to it's outer end bearing (77) so this will affect the end float on the clutch. I have a feeling the bearing (77) can be tapped in further too to decrease end float, but cannot remember from the last rebuild a few years back.

It would be helpful for you to clarify.

Is part number 11 worn thin? I made one that gave me approx 0.015 inch end float and eliminated a clutch draging problem.

Thanks to an old friend Rohan, (and as John Tickell says) I've been advised that the bronze thrust washer part 11 with part 12 is the most likely worn part resulting in too much end play.
