But I agree with others this has been an excellent thread. I always prefer to learn from others' mistakes than my own!
On the positive side, it seems that excess oil coming from that mag chain overflow may be a good indication of problems in the oil feed system.

A final, final, comment on…
A final, final, comment on this thread - I went for an eighty mile blast with a fair amount of well-open throttle (strong headwind for half of it) . This would normally overfill my little yoghourt dash pot. When I unscrewed it (when everything had cooled!) there was a very small amount of oil. So fixing the oil pressure valve did the job. Just in case any one else has a similar prob.
