At the stage now where I need to put crank cases together on my Mk3 rebuild. Whilst I know there are plenty of sealers on the market what seems to be the most popular amongst members.
Also is there a preferred side of the crank to put the shims onto to get the necessary end float. When I stripped the engine, foolishly, I didn't take any notice where it/they were, if there were any at all. I can't find any in the engine parts box.

I found it necessary to shim my Mk.lla crankshaft as the end float was quite large. Part of the reason was the disintegration of the previous shim(s) (see image attached as Crankshaft Shims). Others have also reported shims doing this although I do not believe it is commonplace.
A very satisfactory solution seems to be the shim kit sold by Old Britts which places the shim out of potential harm's way under the main bearing (see image attached as Crankcase Shims).
Regarding sealants, I have used both silicone RTV and Wellseal. Both have worked. Wellseal is reputed to be better as it never really sets and accommodates better any crankcase shuffle. Having said that, so will a low modulus silicone product.
