Just had some machine dating info returned from Chris. On the sheet my Model 20 came from the factory with a panel mount instrament and a dyna gearchange.
I'm presuming the panel mount means the panel tank instrament setup, but whats a dyna gearchange??

This is a very common pair…
This is a very common pair of abbreviations in the factory records through the 1930s. It simply means (mag)dyno fitted and a foot change gearbox.
The record could do with a few commas; Panel tank, Dyno, Foot change....
These were all extra cost options and presumably noted for future spares supply.

Aarrgghh RATS.......here was I thinking my bike had some sort of supercharged gearchange thingy.
Presuming then from this, not all Nortons (road bikes that is, this one was a Model 18) had a Dynamo as standard and on the same tack, hand changes were still around as options. I've seen a few pics of Nortons that age with a hand change. I have a spares book for the war era Big 4 and there is a hand change lever in there as well. Must of been a die hard item.
Am I also correct in assumingat that time the hand change was fitted to the regular Norton dolls head 4 speed box. Without the dolls head because the hand change would have gone direct to the lever on the side of the gearbos which rotated the gear selector cam plate.
