Does anybody know why an ignition coil gets hot.
I was running my Dominator just off the battery, and it got really warm, it's a MA12coil 12v battery.
Also does anybody know what i can do to fix this.
'Really warm'?

It is definitely not just…
It is definitely not just warm its too hot to be comfortable to touch it, I know the ammeters are not very reliable but the needle is flying right over to 6 amps discharge

DOES?
Does the engine run acceptable? if so, then there is very little that is wrong. Turning the engine over until the points open should reduce ALL current to Zero-again if this is so then all is correct. If you are still concerned that the coil might be at fault then fit a new coil, but I expect that will do the same thing.
The other remote possibility is the advance retard cam in the 18D2 is worn and you have an excessive advance period, if so changing the coil will give the same result.
You could always go electronic ignition-2X6V coils with Boyer Bransden.
Your 6A figure is of course meaningless.

Really warm-how hot is that? Too hot to touch is over 60 deg C, anything below that is not an issue, if you reduce the current, then chances are the resultant spark will suffer. 2Amps is about the right current, but do NOT rely on the bikes ammeter, that is notoriously unreliable.
