Camchain tensioner - rubber or plain?

Forums

After seeing the state of my Domi 99 engine I’m starting to question every item in there.

My latest uncertainty relates to the camchain tensioner - the one I took out had a rubber covered face but the side plates of the chain had cut almost all the way through the rubber to the metal underneath. So is it right/better to use a rubber faced tensioner or should the unlined one be used? Is there any benefit to using the rubber one? I guess it should be quieter but I don’t like the idea of the side plates cutting so deeply into the rubber as that must release some small pieces of rubber into the timing case which might find their way into other places and cause problems.

Thanks for your help.

What happens with a new rubber-faced tensioner is that the side plates cut into the rubber.  Once that has happened, the chain rollers run on the rubber, and it then gives the quieter cam chain as promised.

I would suggest keeping the rubber faced tensioner, and keep an eye on further wear.  And fit an oil filter, so any crud in the oil gets taken out, rubber fragments included
