More Dommi 99 Engine Rebuild Questions

Forums

1959 Bike.

I've been advised by a reputable motorcycle mechanic with a proven track record to ditch the Camshaft Breather during the rebuild. Is this a good idea ? What will it achieve ? Will it solve a problem or cause a problem ?

What is the best way to remove old and refit new small end bearings ?

If the flywheel is split, is it sufficient to just bolt it back together aligning marks or should it be professionally balanced ? I want it to run well for a good amount of time, but not to race it !

Thank, Mike

hello  this mechanic   has he had any thing to do with Norton Engine rebuild before,  As the timed Breather is there for a preprose  and removing will cause you many problems  , as for the splitting the Crank shaft you need too line mark it first   you can reuse the bolts but replace the nuts and washer tags  25lb per sq  is the torque   setting  there is no need to re-balance  the camshaft for a model 99 is a 2219QR  the model 99s were alternator and coil ignition from september 1957  timing is 32% before top dead center  fully advanced  , And the best way to remove small ends bushies its to heat them in the oven at 200c  for 20 mins  then have a wooden block to tap the bush out on to  replace when still hot  but use a pair of good leather welders gloves      and its a good idea too take photos as you go  then you know where things go back,  be careful and methodical  as you go now have fun   yours  anna J

Do the little end bushes need changing? Hemmings says they last forever...

The crank checks have a dowels and I think two of the bolts are close tolerance. (Can anyone confirm this?) Its not like a single where there is no positive key to hold the two sides in alignment.

I think the issue with the crank is that its possible to assemble reversed so that the flywheel balance is changed.  Some cranks were marked.I have doubts that cranks were individually balanced though. Perhaps an occasional random check ?. If the motor is down I would think it well worth getting the pistons lightened and balanced against each other and the crank balanced. Then balance the clutch, alternator and wheels!!.
