New rings

Forums

I.m fitting new rings to the Atlas and have been supplied Wellworthy 5 piece oil rings but with no instructions .  3 rails and 2 springs per piston (RGM supply these too)  , Information on end gaps and the position of the extra rail would be usefull. The compression rings are cast iron and the grooves will be machined to fit.

Thankyou Anna,  My 2 compression rings appear to be identical cast iron and very resilient and difficult to compress . I will definitely need spring compressors.

I have been checking the weight of the commando pistons against the original Low comp Atlas ones. They are much heavier, approx 18 grames each!. I have also checked the weight of the apparently identical AE commando pistons that were fitted. The weights are different to the tune of 3 one pence pieces. I have a set of laboratory balance scales that measure so accurately that two seemingly identical new 5 p coins show a good difference to each other. All great fun.I have been steadily reducing the imbalance by grinding away casting flash, raised lettering and knife edging the skirts.,I am also surprised by the very heavy duty gudgion pins which are much heavier than the 99 ones that were admittedly probably a bit on the weak side.

Interesting that with a hundred pictures on the net of how to fit rings ,there are none with the 5 piece oil ring. I have one post saying 2  rails above expander and Anna saying the opposite . I think I believe Anna!!.Perhaps it does not matter.
