A friend of mine has a 1955 Dominator 88 of which he frequently says that with its rebuilt engine it starts easily with ’ just a prod ‘ of the kickstart lever. In comparison, my 1956 Dominator 99 requires a significant effort to kickstart it and the compression is such that I can stand on the kickstart lever against the compression.
Yesterday he came over and his first attempt to start my bike was amusing as he expected it to start with ‘ just a prod ‘ . He was very surprised at the significantly increased effort required to start my 99. Does the extra 100cc make that much difference in starting effort ?
I would be interested to hear from other more experienced owners than me as to whether they can start their 99 perhaps with ‘ just a prod ‘ .

The compression ratios climbed up over the years and the 59/60 head raised it too. My 99 is like yours ,needs a determined shove to get it moving. The extra 100cc is only half the story as the 88 had a better action all round. I usually just ease it over tdc before kicking.I'm sure my air filter has ensured a better than average bore.
