Model 7 carb finish / side stand

Forums

Hello to all. This my first posting on the forum so hope I follow correct protocol !

I am doing a full nut and bolt restoration of a '52 plunger model 7 to the highest standard I can achieve. The 276 pre-monoblock carb is in need of a cosmetic makeover (as well as the internals). Perfectly functionable but the body has a fair bit of pitting from corrosion and the steel / brass items need re-plating.

Does anyone know if the body should be bare alloy (in which case I'll have it vapour blasted), or should it be painted silver (an internet search points me towards Eastwood Carb Renew II - anyone used this or have other suggestions ?).

What should the steel / brass items be plated with - chrome (probably not I think), bright zinc, nickel, other ? I could just buy new items I know but that works out very expensive.

I'm in need of a sidestand - anyone got one they are prepared to part with ? Likewise a head steady.

Thanks all.

Derek

Every 276 body that I've seen has had a thin silver lacquer on and 'New Old Stock' fittings most commonly seem to be dull chrome on the brass or if bright chromed then over a machined finish. Certainly not bright chrome over a polished base with rounded off hexagons which is what usually happens by re-chroming.

It's very difficult to pick this level of detail up from period photos.

Bacon in "Norton twin restoration" says "Earlier Amal bodies were finished in a silver-grey paint specially developed to resist petrol....no longer available...don't use anything else without a trial first"

New ones are bare metal.

I also think the silver paint finish looks correct. Certain makes had special carb finishes ,Rudge carbs had chrome plated bodies along with special stepped  tops and intake flanges plus overbored pilot/bypass drillings. A lot of Norton  chassis fittings were dull chrome .

Thanks guys - thats great advice. Brilliant !

Only thing left now to sort out is a sidestand and head steady (for the head steady, I've never seen what it looks like. If its fabricated rather than a cast item, I could probably make one if I just new what it looked like).

Cheers

Derek

Thank you for the pictures Doug. Now I see how simple the head steady is, I can make one no problem.

I've had a couple of estimates now for dull chrome plating my original bits and pieces (about £70ish) and its only slightly more to buy new items and I can get those straight away but will have to wait about 6 weeks for the chroming  ! Its a crazy world.

Thanks again

Derek
