Tyres for an Electra

I would welcome advise on which tyres to put on my electra currently it has front avon ribbed 3.00x 19 and avon block tread3.60 x18 rear manual states the tyres should be 3.00x19 and 3.25x18

I am able to find a new Avon ribbed front but the rear is advertised as a 4.00x18 which I thought would be too wide for a wm3

any thought would be appreciated

trevor Hi Trevor I fitted Roadrider tyres to my Electra 90/90- 19 front 100/90-18 back. I had the same trouble finding tyres that fitted and looked right so I went modern. The front was ok the back I had to cut a small part from the back fender near the chainguard which is out of sight to let the tyre run clear. They are a good road tyre but not what I realy wanted. On a week long club run a few gravel roads were used I found hard gravel ok but loose gravel was a nightmare almost dropping it a few times. I decided no more gravel for this bike. On one of the stops I told my tale of woe to a Enfield rider on one of the newer bikes he said he put roadrider on the Enfield but took them off again finding them terrable on gravel. I know this wont effect your riding in England but that was my experience with them BryonCurrrington Alberta

thanks for your comments, it would seem that if I want to keep to the same make or type of tyre I will have to go with the avon roadride.r

Have you or does anyone else have thoughts of using different makes such as avon front and dunlop rea. The only other tyres I can find are Mitas these are a cheaper brand but I am not sure of the quality , bearing in mind I shall only be pottering around 40/60 mph

any thoughts would be appreciated

You may potter at 40 to 60 but the idiot who pulls out in front will not worry about that, these 2 tyres are your only points of contact with the road so go for the best which currently are Avon Roadriders. You brakes will never worry the tyres but if you need to lean over more than normal they will hold you up and are good in the wet.

I have some experience riding lightweights and it is my recommendation you go for a ribbed front and a 3.25 section rear. I believe my recently purchased tyres were Avon on the front and Dunlop on the rear.

I've also worked on these bikes. I can assure you that going to 3.25 section on the front will be running too close to the mudguard mount bolts and the fork bridge bolts. Keep to 3.00ribbed on the front. The recommended 3.25 section rear tyre only just misses the inside front left of the mudguard (fender) and in many cases chainguard rub mudguard, or tyre rubs mudguard or mudguard rubs swinging arm (front right). It's all very close and needs careful setting.

I find the recommended size tyres give good handling, even on gravel, allow removal of the rear wheel (just) and match the lift of the centre stand.

NO a 4.00x18 fits a WM3 rim as My 650 Norton Manxman has a 4.00x18 rear wheel , they also where fitted to the 750 Atlas, its the same Size wheel, so now you know, havd fun yours Anna J
