I'm still working my way down the can of worms that is my friend's recently-acquired 1960 Dommie 88. The latest finding is that it has been recently re-bored and fitted with shiny new GPM pistons. Very nice, except they are 68.5mm pistons! The standard 88 bore being 66mm, of course.

When I restored my own 1963 88 it had 68mm pistons and, for reasons which I can't now remember, I was under the impression that that was as far as it was safe to go, so I had it sleeved back to 66mm.

The cylinder walls below the barrel base on the near-enough 0.100" oversize barrel average about 0.090" thick, but at one point on the right cylinder it is as thin as 0.070" at the bottom, and there are two grooves low down round an arc of the cylinder bore near this point. They do look like grooves rather than cracks, but can anyone tell me if it will be safe to run the engine with this bore, or is my friend looking at an expensive sleeving exercise?

I am a bit of a worry wort and would not be happy with that. But then I have run with well worn big ends for years. Finding decent barrels is an issue now and I'm not a fan of liners. There is a possibility of new barrels in the future.

If you do go down the liner route, I can recommend David Burton Engineering. My 650SS was 60 thou over and the barrels were damaged due to standing for too long before I bought it. The sleeving cost £150, which I thought very reasonable. The biggest costs were for the new pistons. Still in the process of restoration so unable to say anything about longevity/reliability of sleeving, but I have no reason to worry after meeting with David.
