Magneto platform

Forums

Whilst assembling my 1950/51 es2 I've discovered how many small parts are missing, thesedo hold up progress also parts that you think arecorrect but when its time to use them there the wrong items. I've come up against such a scenario now and i am in need for advise please. My problem is the magneto shaft does not protrude far enough through into the mag chain housing, the mag is 1/2 inch away from the housing (all pictures I've seen show that the mag is tight up against the back of housing) all i can put this down to is i have the wrong mag platformand its this that'sholding the mag away from sitting tight to its housing. the only id on mag platform are casting numbers 11899 wm.

Does any one have the correct casting id or even measurements from platforms fixing point to the holes nearest mag shaft that fix mag to platform. hope this makes sense.

There are at least three different offsets on the mag platforms. I too found out the hard way and had to arrange a swap to get the right one for my WD model. Pre-1938 and WD models have the least offset (the face of the fixing is in line with the screw holes). 1938 - 47 have a little more offset and yours (post 1948 have most).

Unfortunately, I don't have any incorrect spares anymore, but they are out there !

Cast iron or mazac are definitely wartime economy versions but all three can be of the similar cast aluminium type.

Richard thank you for replying now i know that theres more than one platform i had better start looking for one.

Hi Jonathan

Based on what Richard has said yours should have the biggest offset being 50/51. So how can you have something that puts it too far away? Or am I getting confused about the direction of the offset?

There should be a gap between the mag and the timing chest. 1/2 inch sounds big but I'll measure it on my '51 ES2 tommorow. Have you definitely got the right sprocket? That has an offset too with the nut pulling down inside a recess.

Hi Jonathan.

I do have a platform, but we should probably email dimensions first to be sure it would work. I am in the USA & rebuild mags, so this came with a box of Norton mags.

Wassell sells a reproduction Norton magneto platform oem# C2/117, wassell number WW50203.

I can order you one, but I am sure you could get it in the UK for less due to shipping. Any Wassell dealer can get them like Spares for Classic Motorcycles, and others.

If you wish to discuss my platform & its dimensions, I can be reached at sbrolund@yahoo.com

Thanks,

This is a picture that I took when I was sorting mine out so I don't have a note of the markings...

On the left is a 1938 pattern platform (for the flat lever followers engine) , centre is a wartime economy mazac item - dimensionally identical to the right hand which is pre/ early wartime. You can see that the screw hole position differs slightly on the left hand part.

There is also a late-war cast iron 'skeleton' platform which again only fits the pre-'38 engines...and yours with the circular tappets and the widest timing chest needs the greatest overhang.

Unfortunately, I can't find the notes that I made at the time with casting numbers and these bear no relationship to the part numbers (on the older bikes, at least).
