Upright gearbox numbering

Forums

Hello

The PO of my 1946 Model 18 obtained a copy of the factory record entries from the club in 2017.  All the numbers tally except I am not clear about the gearbox.

The gearbox shell casting numbers are 1008N and an 'L' (see picture); not sure what the 'L' is but 1008N consistent with information from this site for a 1946 bike.

The inner cover is stamped G5J46 (see picture).  The '46' I believe refers to the year, it is also present on the tank number.  Is it from this stamping, that the Gear Box No 'J' comes from that is shown in the factory record?  Does the G5 have any significance?

(The outer cover is stamped with an N at the top, presumably a neutral indicator mark.  Outer cover is clearly 1946 as it has the one-year-only round cover access to the clutch cable / actuator.)

Hi Robert,

G5 = 16H, Big-4, ES2 1946-49

G15 = International, “Garden-gate" 1946-52

G16 = Manx, "Garden-gate" 1946-50

G55 = Daytona Manx

G56 = 500T 1949-54

G110 = 500T

Your J46 denotes build month September in 1946.

Post-war Burman gearboxes are numbered by type for example G16 or G5 followed by a letter and two numbers which give the month and year of manufacture for example G90 M48 means a Burman type G90 which was made in December 48 (A=January, M=December and the letter I was not used)
