1938 Model 18 - Rim sizes and suitable tyres

Forums

Hi,

I have a 1938 Model 18 Norton 500 that I purchased 2 years ago in England remotely from here in Australia. Due to the Chinese Flu issues I have not been able to travel to England to see the bike yet and so it has been languishing in my mates shed ever since.

However, due to the easing restrictions I shall be travelling to England in September and will be riding the bike on holiday for 2 weeks in Spain for the MC Indianos Club VI North of Spain Rally (27th September to 2nd October) and the XI Colombres Rally (3rd to 9th October)

I would like to arrange to have new modern tyres fitted for the holiday.

I assume the rims are 1.85" WM2 front and rear. Is that correct ?

If so then I am looking at having Avon Road Rider 90/90 x 19 on the front and 3.25 x 19 Avon Road Rider on the back. Are these tyres the correct choice for the rims please ?

A possible alternative is an Avon Road Rider 100/90 x 19 for the rear but it appears that the 1.85 WM2 rim is too narrow for this tyre ?

Any assistance would be much appreciated

Thanks

depend on what wheels the bike has?

They may have been changed since 1938. Can your mate tell you what size tyres are fitted currently? This will give you a better idea of where to start.

Once this is known, talk to the technical people at Avon about what is the best fitment. The issue of tyre bead/rim type may also arise, but there should be a model expert along shortly.

There may be issues with what modern tyres will fit, given that modern tyre profiles may be very different from the original tyres.

Most such today have ribbed 3.00 Avon Speedmaster front and 3.25x19 SM Mk2 rear.  Original had 3.25 each end, probably because it was convenient with QD wheels and sidecar all having the same.  ES2 went to 3.00 front in the 50's by which time sidecars were in decline, and the Inters used 3.00 front in the 30's.  RoadRiders look odd to my eyes on old machines.  The rubber is alleged to be similar.

Thanks for your comments. I think that I'll go 325 x 19 Road Riders for both front and back.

I appreciate that they may look a bit out of place on a 1938 bike but I prefer a good gripping tyre for the twisty roads in northern Spain rather that older style tyres
