Cleaning Tank badges

That looks absolutely typical how the finish goes.  Unless you are building a "Trailer Queen"   I would rub down and paint with one of the immitation  chrome paints ,and expect to have to do it again in a few years. The finish is being attacked from the inside by pockets of corrosion that the base material has always  had . The heavy twin suffers the same and there are some heavy brass replica's that are the answer to making the heavy twin  even more so.

It might be worth trying some chrome finish vinyl wrap.  Use a bit of hot air to get it to fit the contours.  Perhaps quite a good application because the edges can go safely round the back before it is screwed in place. Lots of YouTube videos on how to apply the stuff.

My ones were in a worse condition and I had them Chrome sprayed by a company near Gloucester.

that was about two years ago and they are still looking good, cannot remember the cost but I think it was about £80 for the two badges.

Another possibility is to polish the chrome off altogether down to the 'Mazac' base metal and polish that, when just done it looks fantastic but does need doing quite often.

Steve, those badges of yours look absolutely great, one of the problems has always been that platers refuse to touch them, saying that, "you can't chrome that stuff", to which a reply of " 50 million car door handles say you're wrong" usually just begets a finger pointing at the door.

Yes had all that with the platers "a deep intake of breath and sucking of teeth cannot do that mate it will destroy my solution" 

Got these available if wanted - de-chromed, polished & lacquered - not sure if the red is still on them at moment though.  Managed to get a decent re-chromed set so these are surplus

I had my Atlas badges rechromed by S&T Plating in Yate (near Bristol).They used a heavy copper coat to fill the inevitable craters under the old chrome and the result was pretty good (though not cheap), with no loss of definition from the copper and polishing.
