Rectifier bracket

Can anyone post a photo of how the rectifier bracket is mounted on a Mk 3 commando and what else is mounted on it.

Hello Nigel,

Just popped into the garage, not ideal in the middle of the night and under torch light I took a couple of pictures that may or may not help?

543 is from above and shows where the bracket (Stainless) is fixed to the frame, next to the capacitor fixing. Note the stainless side panel rear fixing bracket outside of the rectifier bracket.

The bracket is quite long and hopefully 545 shows the rectifier attached at the bottom of the bracket.

Sorry for the poor quality of photos, both light and access not ideal.

The long Mk3 rectifier bracket 06-4063 is bolted to the rear frame gusset plate on the left side.

It has alot of stuff fitted starting with the starter solenoid bracket 06-5978 and solenoid bolted across the top. The blue capacitor and spring, rectifier and side panel support bracket 06-1204 are all bolted to this as well on a standard Mk3.

I should have said that I removed the starter motor and all associated parts during restoration in 1988/89. Also I have used the smaller square modern rectifier that has not been an issue.

Also I replaced the capacitor at the same time. Fair Spares called it the 'blue thing.' I often wondered why this failed to kick in at times of having a flat battery?

Earlier this year I ordered a new capacitor, but this time from RGM. I asked for ''the Blue Thing' when Anna said, yours is a Mk 3, you need a black thing!!!!

It was seeing the 'Blue Thing' in Neill Watkins photo that reminded me.   

thanks Neil, the side bracket  info is of interest to me as my bike was incomplete when I bought it, there was no tank and only an interstate r/h side panel . I have now bought a roadster tank and some used roadster side panels. They need fitting , so any further info / pics on what is needed to mount them will be appreciated.

Hi Nigel,

Bit difficult at the moment as it is away for the winter so access is tight, but if I have to roll it back I'll be sure to take some better pictures.  Mine is an Interstate but changing the side panels is optional. I just happened to have the panel off for maintenance. 

Paul Goff has the new rectifiers @ a fiver and the old finned type at thirty quid. Your choice but remember the black capacitor!

With a flat battery you have to remove the main fuse before the capacitor will work, if you leave the flat battery in circuit then the alternator juice will go to the battery before the capacitor. Even then its a touch and go if a kick will get the ignition to work, on my B44 with red boyer box it will start no issue with no battery, on the 850 with same boyer box and 3 phase alternator then a hill start is best or a lot of kicks.

Well pointed out, John.

I forgot to mention the fuse, but the blue thing didn't work anyway, though it did fill a space.

There is a Boyer power box on my Poor man's Manx and the capacitor in that has saved me on a couple of occasions. You know when you are running off the power box, because the ammeter becomes inactive.

I have faith that the 'black thing' thing will actually do its job, though I hope it won't be necessary.
