Electric Start Dommi

Forums

Hello, I seem to remember someone was working on an electric starter for the Dominator, did anything come of that, would be good for my knee.

I'm with you on the knee Roger. I bought an Alton assembly: my project is a slimline with an upright 850, so basically just a large Atlas. Engine will be mounted upright, so magneto or distributor ignition is out, but of course the Commando has points in the timing cover.

I will be using standard Dommie tin cases, I have had the inner strengthened with additional steel plate.and will be fabricating an inner torque plate for the drive chain assembly.

Lots of other issues, and project on hold for now, but if this is of interest to anyone, contact me through the club, and i will happily share notes/photos etc.

Hi Don, the length of the Alton starter in a "normal" mounting would interfere with the distributor I think (going from memory as I don't have access to my workshop presently). It could probably be mounted further back, but that would entail a longer drive chain and have a knock-on effect on the primary chaincases. It might also require manufacturing new gearbox plates.

Regards, Mike.

I resolved this problem with my Dommie electric start by using an Electrex generator/ignition.

No Distributor, points or magneto required.  Plenty of room.

I think the Alton unit is the same.

Steve,

I'm quite new to the NOC, did you do a write up of your electric start conversion?

Hi Don

Here is the write up on the mechanical engineering I used.

Unlike many NOC members, I am a big fan of Electrex. Great starting, best of any british bike I have ever had.

Output is low, but with LED bulbs, that's no problem.

Hi Steve, where are you now with this project? Is it worth carrying on with? Is there a kit available? If yes how much is the kit?

If a kit is not available and IS WORTH CONTINUING WITH could the club become involved in some way - I suspect there is a market here with us wrinklies trying to start up [and not just getting out of bed]?
