I have aquired a very good Lucas SR1 Magneto and was wondering if anyone had used one to replace the magdyno on an ES2?
How do you go about retarding the timing to start it?
Do you need any special sprockets or diferent timing cover?
How hard is it to fit an alternator as per the featherbed ES2s ? Would I need a different cranckshaft?
I can't help much with SR1 except to say the manual is on line at Brightspark web site. It looks like platform mount, rather than flange mount, so you'd need the platform. It seems like it might have built-in advance. If not, the Dommie auto advance has a slightly smaller range, and those are hard to come by.
The alternator cranks are different because they have an extension to take the rotor with its Woodruff key. If you do fit a mag, you won't need the battery except for lights and horn, and with LED you can get away with total loss provided you charge it at home.
Sounds like a nice idea, but a lot of effort for little reward unless the existing mag is worn out. If it suffers from condensor failure, Brightspark sell an external one you can fit yourself.
.. is rotating magnet so more reliable than the standard type. I had one on a trials Bullet and made a new end plate incorporating manual advance / retard although they generally came with auto version.
I agree with David however, a lot of work for possibly minimal gain.
