Magneto sprocket

Forums

Hi

I have 2 advance/retard sprockets 1 has perfect teeth but 1 of the spring locators is broken, the other sprocket has what I might assume as worn out teeth but advance/retard is perfect, I cant see how I am going to be able to take apart to make a good one, the locating ring is either heat shrunk on or is threaded. Please could anyone advise? maybe they are not serviceable ?

Many thanks jim

Hello Robert - There is a collar on the end of the shaft that goes on to the magneto.  First it's best to remove the tightening bolt by lifting it and engaging the left-hand thread in the top of the unit. The design is such that the raised portion with the left-hand thread cannot normally engage as it is part way down the bolt. Some light pressure is required to lift the bolt until the raised portion hits the top and then rotate it c/w to engage the screwed part and out it comes.  A small sharp edged chisel is handy to then slowly move the collar from the unit. As it starts to edge forward increase the chisel size to gently prise the collar off the unit.  Do not use excessive force or a big hammer.   Once the collar is off it's plain sailing to dismantle the unit.  Good luck, Howard

Hi Howard,

I have successfully dismantled both units as your instructions, many thanks again, there is just 1 problem in that after doing one I discovered 1 very small washer and when doing the other I found the same small washer of which I cannot trace where to replace, in your great knowledge would you be able to tell me where to place it?

Regards jim

Hello again Robert - Well done.  I've just read your request and need to have a look and see.  I shall do this tomorrow following the Rugby game.  Is it a small and very thin washer and are you sure there is only one ?  howard

So jim or robert ?  It was great game but it was never in doubt !!! ??

Ok so there are four small shim washers on each unit.  Two fit beneath the pivots for the main weights that are under the spring retainer pins and the other two fit under the fulcrum of the secondary weights that attach to the springs.  On older units the springs can wear so thin that they are undetectable or even vanished.  Good luck - Cum on Ingurlaaand !  Howard
