Hi. I removed the various fittings from my basket case Dommie 99 oil tank and found that the filter gauze was lying loose in the bottom of the tank. I assumed that it had simply fallen off the inside of the oil feed spigot but now I’m not so sure. On looking at the oil feed spigot there doesn’t seem to be any way of it having a filter gauze fitted. There’s no raised portion onto which a gauze could be pushed over and soldered. There’s only the threaded part that screws into the oil tank. Is my spigot missing something that would allow a filter gauze to be fitted or didn’t my bike (a 1960 Dommie 99) come with a filter in the oil tank?
Thanks
Regards
Tony
Oil filter gauze.

Hi Richard. Thanks for the…
Hi Richard. Thanks for the reply. Yes, you’re right, there is a shallow ‘well’ in the top of the spigot. I was confused because I expected to see a raised section that the gauze fitted over, but now I know that it fits inside the spigot that gives me a good starting point. I’ve bought a new filter gauze from RGM so I won’t have to worry about oil contamination on that item, I’ll clean the spigot with brake cleaner - that should get it clean.
Thanks again

Hi Tony, be very careful…
Hi Tony, be very careful using brake cleaner where you intend to solder weld or braze. Most brake cleaner contains Tetrachloroethylene which breaks down into Phosgene at over 315 Celsius.

Hi Marc, Thank you so much…
Hi Marc, Thank you so much for stopping me make a potentially hazardous mistake. I never knew that fact about brake cleaner (or other cleaners that contain tetra...)
I’ll clean the spigot with parts washer fluid instead of brake cleaner.
Thanks again

Hi Tony,
Yes your 99 should have a gauze filter. The union that screws into the tank should look fairly hollow where it fits in the tank, as the filter is a close fit on the inside and is then soldered to it. If you solder it yourself you can use plumbers solder and flux, but make sure everything is spotless. The gauze will probably be knocked out of shape so you might have to reshape it over a piece of tube to get it to fit well.
