Clutch Cable Recommendations

Forums

Dear all,

clutch cable snapped at the barrel head at the end lever this afternoon.  Meant my. good wife had to find a cable repair kit (tracked down something at Euro car parts) as a get me home.

The cable was a new(ish) Venhill with the barrel in a nylon sleeve.  It was well lubricated too.

Any recommendations before I go to Andover for a pair of replacements? (one spare!)

Also any tips on fitting a new one?

cheers

Mick

This is rare, I have not known a cable with the nylon sleeve to break. The version without the nylon sleeve used to snap on a regular basis.

Let's hope it was a 'one off' Ashley.  It gave warning as I could feel half the wires 'ping' before it finally gave up.  I lubed it with PTFE and the barrel was seated correctly with the nylon sleeve over the barrel in the lever.  I don't think its the correct lever for the bike but it does take that fitment.

People have commented on what a light action she had so I think it was routed properly.

Anyhow - ordered two from Andover - hopefully I'll be back on the road soon.

When the cable fails at the barrel nipple the usual cause is age related rust. Or, the barrel nipple is a little too tight in the lever causing the cable to bend even a small amount at the soldered joint resulting in stress failure.

Thanks for the Dave,

I'm keeping an eye on the replacement.  The lever is not original and as I discovered fitting the new cable, doesn't have enough on the adjuster to keep the outer cable taught enough.  There's a spacer in between - not ideal - leading to an 'untidy' run.

I'll need to get a new lever I think.  Ordered a new adjuster from Andover - but it is too big for the current. lever leading me to suspect that that. the lever is just 'any old' lever...

Things to sort!

Just thought, but before tightening the top cable adjuster have you checked for play at the clutch pushrod adjuster first especially if fitting a new cable.

Yes - followed Ashley's (Andover Norton) advice.  Just had enough clearance to the outer case to slip the new cable on.  Will check again to. see if there's been much stretch.

thanks Graham
