I'm sure this question has been done the death in the past. But what oil do people use in their bikes. I'm starting to put my 1936 inter back together and its time to make the decision on oil. I know several people that use castrol R but have spoken to others that have said just use a straight 40 or 50.
Thanks
Andy
The problem with Castrol R…

I don't profess to be an expert but I have five Norton singles (incl SV, OHV and OHC)and a Model 7 and I use Castrol XXL (straight 40) in them all, mainly because it looks and feels nice and the local bike shop (RM Motorcycles in Beverley) sells it. 20W50 Multigrades and XL seem a bit too thin. I use Penrite HPR40 in my classic cars, which is 25W70, and I have occasionally used this in bikes. It also seems a good quality oil. As I said, no particular reason! Nick

It really depends on ambient themperatures. Here in Australia I only use Penrite HPR 50 in all my Nortons (ES-2, Inter, WD Big 4 and 650SS) and have done so for over 20 years without an issue. (I even use it in the Grey Fergie!!)

Morris oils do a good deal too. The VMCC have a discount code VMCC100 which members use to get an extra 10% off online orders. Does the NOC still have the same arrangement?

Yes the NOC has a similar arrangement with Morris Oils. Check it out under 'Member Benefits'.

The problem with Castrol R is formation of a hard varnish on the engine internals which is near impossible to remove. Some advocate draining the oil after every use, refilling the tank only before starting it again. Mineral oils are generally a better bet for a highly tuned classic, though they don't smell as nice. I will be using SAE 40 in the 1931 Rudge TT Replica former racer I am recommissioning.
