Veglia advice please

Hi,

My 850 Commando is equipped with Veglia instruments. The Speedo has been 'got at' and is not worth sending for repair/calibration so I shall replace with a Smiths electronic. The Tacho does however work but needs some TLC. Again, I don't believe that it warrants spending £180 on it but, if I can just tidy it up and then get a few years service rom it that will be fine.

These instruments were definitely not meant to be repaired and the internals comprise both alloy and plastic moulding riveted together. I shall not attempt to make them part company and shall leave 'well as they are'.

The spindle passes through the plastic casting (Nylon?) which does not require lubrication....please correct me if I am wrong. The drive however is metallic and rotates in a soft alloy casting. My question is how best to clean/lubricate with all in situ and what with?

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I repaired my Veglia speedo twice, once to fix the worm gear which popped out of its home and the second time to glue the spindle to the cup on which it was rotating independently. I used 3 in 1 on those bearings and it has been fine for many years. Oddly, the tacho has never been stripped in the 50k miles I've done! They are repairable, depending on whats gone wrong of course.

Thanks for your re assurance. 3 in 1 it shall be, but just a smidging!

Unfortunately my speedo is missing the main trip so all in all, probably best to call it a day, since it would need calibrating, if nothing more than to avoid a nasty gram from the local volunteer speeding patrols.

Hi,

Calibration on these is to run with drill at appx known speed (I use a cordless which is 700 rpm no load cw and probably 650 ccw for the speedo) remove needle and replace as needed. 60 mph is 1000 rpm appx depending on tyres so I aim for 40 mph with the drill. Its within 5-6%.
