Upright Oil Leak

Forums

Hi,

Need a bit of technical advice on an upright gearbox in an ES2..

I have an oil leak which appears to be coming from the selector shaft behind the cam plate at the bottom of the gearbox.

Are there seals or o'rings in the housing and do I have to dismantle the gearbox to repair.?

Appreciate any assistance..

In bronze type bush. I remember a cork washer behind the arm. Maybe it was a running repair…

The bush is a replaceable. If it’s leaking it’s worn… and yes you need to dismantle the box to do it, but it’s not complex. Some favour “O” ring modification but there is so little rotation I think the original solution is sufficient.

A laydown box i worked on last year had leaks from both the selector shaft and the quadrant shaft.

Box apart and the case machined for the later O ring seals, new bushes fitted at the same time as they were worn out.

Thanks for the quick update..

Not sure our local guys in Aus will have a bush in stock.. Can you suggest a UK distributor that might be able to help.

Hi Geoff,

Penrite (Australia) sells semi fluid grease, as specified originally for the upright gearbox.  It melts at about 45c and does not seem to flow at lower temps, so it shouldn't leak when it is parked.

Hi Ross,

Thanks for that, the box is good otherwise so that might save me dismantling it.

I will give that a try before I go any further.

Regards

Geoff
