Hi Steve, Can't tell you if it's the right shaft or not but I can tell you I've had my spring on and off numerous times in the last months and I have no trouble getting the spring in the holes. Plenty of room. I have a dolls head gearbox.

The later 'Laydown' box had alternative kickstart return spring covers according to whether the box was intended for a single or a twin so something must have been different internally. It may be that you have a later part. It's notoriously easy to mix things up on Nortons....which is why many of us have a big pile of autojumble purchases that look as if they'll fit but don't.

Richard thanks. looking at upright and laydown gearbox parts in my parts manuals I can now see that the spring cover

is shorter on the laydown and probably so is the kickstart shaft. now need a longer shaft or maybe drill another hole close to the kickstart lever exept the cover which is missing will probably not fit
