Tyre pressure?

Forums

When in doubt ... ask those who know :)

I have searched the forum to no avail.

The courier has just delivered my 1947 Model 18 which is fitted with Dunlop Gold Seal K70 tyres.

Can anyone advise me as to what the tyre pressures should be?

Many thanks

Ian

IanHi Ian, New tyres (even if the same names) are built differently to the those orriginaly fitted and need higher pressures than specified in the old manuals, pressures are also relative to the riders weight and speeds , I would add 5lbs to the old figures as a start and then go from there.I adjust my pressures according to the temperature that the tyres run, after a fast run on dry roads i feel the tyres, a hot tyre is running too soft ,a cold tyre is running too hard, I understand that some use rising pressure to the same effect , i think the figure was 10percent gain when warmed up. I think Avon has reccomendation on a webb site.

Modern tyres have softer sidewalls than the period originals and need higher pressures. The WD16H originally specified 17psi front, 20psi rear which would have you squirming all over the road on K70s.

I run 27 front / 30 rear on mine with Indian Dunlops (I'm 10 1/2 stone and err towards stability rather than comfort when setting pressures.

Ian- I have K 70 tires (tyres) on my 1950 ES 2- Main-Smith reprint of the 1950 owners manual calls for 20 lbs front and 23 lbs rear and though it does not state tire make/model I have not experienced any trouble using these pressures-hope this is of some help-Richard
