Timing a PW3 cam

Forums

If I recall; - a few years ago, there was an instructive article in the Roadholder magazine about timing a PW3 cam.

Unfortunately, I have lost my copy and cannot remember the issue number.

Has anyone got a copy that they could scan/e-mail/post to me, or is it possible to order a back copy?

Generally using the original timing methods with the marks on the timing gears and the correct links on the timing chain will give you a cam that is advanced by 5 degrees compared with Mick Hemmings procedure. These are the notes I made when I fitted my PW3 cam

Standard timing marks give 0.145" lift @ 5 degrees before TDC

To retard cam timing by 5 degrees, turn cam sprocket one tooth anticlockwise (40degrees) (9 pins between marks on the timing chain)

and turn the intermediate gear 3 teeth clockwise against the crank pinion mark (45 degrees)

Some tuners believe that the PW3 cam benefits from up to 10 degrees of advance. just using standard settings will give 5. the problem is that the relationship between inlet and exhaust timing is fixed.

i have just scanned the Hemmings instructions but the attachment limit is 1000Kilobytes failCry

Plus Excel spreadsheets so you can search for the article

Just had a look John. Very handy. I didn't know you could do that. Unfortunately, the article I'm after is in RH 262, which is 2008, and I don't seem to have permission to view.

You should email the webmaster, some issues he uploaded do not have the right permissions and sounds like you found one he missed when he went back in to correct.
