I am having probems with weak or missing sparks on my late featherbed 30M. It is fitted with a P.A.L speedway-type magneto with external HT coil. I have renewed the coil unit but the problem persists. I am only seeing 100 or so millivolts at the primary output when I turn the rear wheel as fast as I can on the stand.Does this seem correct or incorrect to any of you boffins ? Can anyone recommend suitable alternatives to the P.A.L besides Lucas 2MTT which alas is unaffordable at the moment? Thanks. Howard

Hi Howard A suitable magne…
Hi HowardA suitable magneto would be a BTH TTmag. These were used on the Manx up until the mid 1950s or you could use one of the Lucas competition mags such as the KNR1 or KNC1. The spindle height for a Manx is 45mmbut some magnetos are 35mm, so if you obtain one which is 35mm you will require a 10mm packer under the magneto.

I worked on a road going Manx for a chap in New York City. Because he wanted lights, we obtained a German unit with dynamo function as well as ignition. It worked well.
