Speedo cable ES2

Forums
Can anyone confirm whether the speedo cable in the NOC shop noted as being for a "Chronometric Featherbed" will fit a '55 ES2? It's the correct length (57.5") but the past number (SS09 F2_H12) does not match the book part number of B2/552. Many thanks for any help. George

If no-one can give you a definite answer George, I would say as long as the length is correct then it should fit. Speedo's and drive boxes have long threadswhich are always the same. Generally the biggest concern is buying the inner or outer separately as these might not match up length wise....Anyway someone will know for sure, but as said, not too much of a gamble.....Les

I did answer your note, Les, but it seems to have gone adrift. It was just grateful thanks for responding. I figured as much but didn't want to throw good money after bad. I've now ordered the cable from NOC Shop so we'll see in due course..........G

Thanks David. I'd been onto that site but had not looked at your particular part. Very useful. Cheers George

Checked the drive cable - all OK. It would seem the instrument is at fault. £180 to renovate. Any suggestions? George

George...I see you've had Nortons a lot longer than me so I hesitate to ask.. but what are the instrument"s problems? When I first encountered chronometric speedos I first understood why speedos conveniently told the sleuths what speed a vehicle was travelling when it crashed. The age of 'classic' detective stories coincided with the age of the chronometric speedo.David .

Hi David - It's jerky - when it works - but is currently stuck at 25 mph. Even connecting an electric drill to the end of the flexible drive does not give any meaningful result. So I asked one firm for an order of cost and got the figure I've quoted. Was wondering whether a trade in would be cheaper. George

I am thinking that the inner cable is broken.

Try removing the speedo from the mounting and after making a tool to fit up into the speedo where the cable fits, drive the tool with the electric drill. For the tool I used something like an 8d nail that I cut off the head and then ground the end to be the same size as the end of the cable that fits up into the speedo.

Hopefully the speedo will work up and down as per normal.

I had the exact same symptoms as you have and the test proved that the inner was broken.

Let us know the results of the test

I tried that, Mike, but the drive cable is fine. It is definitely the speedo. I've now sent it off to the firm noted in the NOC Services section. I'm hoping that will resolve the issue. George

Just to tidy this up - I sent the speedo to Speedo Repairs (see Services section) - Ashly Pople - on Monday; had a telephone call to discuss it on Wednesday; received it back on Friday; fitted and working that same day. Cannot recommend him enough. He knows his stuff! George

George:

You were previously quoted GBP180 to overhaul your speedo, what was the all in from Ashly Pople?

Thanks

The basic service was £80 but I needed a new (and re-sited) trip shaft and knob plus a new chrome bezel. So with p&p (Special Delivery - fully insured) the whole lot came to £122. I thought it was a fair price and Ashley's service was second to none. George
