Slimline Model 50 Mufflers?

Forums

I recently bought from RGMa muffler (silencer) for my Slimline Model 50.

I ordered pn: 22121 which is the correct number from the parts book.

What they sent me was their number Z611 and their description reads"Q73..1 Dommie & early Commando silencer R/H"

It looked good but when i tried to mount it I found that the two mounting holes are about 3" forward of a vertical drop from the passenger peg mounting hole. The mounting holes in the mufflerare about 9" to the rear of the muffler inlet. I had to make a custom bracket to make it fit.

So the question becomes: Are the mounting holes in the mufflerlocated differently on the singles muffler as compared to the twins mufflers? Is RGM just trying to get away with a common part instead of making a "special" unit for the singles?

Does anyone know of a supplier of a correct singles muffler if in fact the one I have is incorrect?

Thanks

Mike

Hi Mike!

Armour Motor Products (01202 519409) list the silencer for a Featherbed Model 50 as HDN3A (their number)

Silencers for Featherbed Dominators are different (Ref HDN10)

Commandos have a range of differing part numbers all depending on which version it is.

So it appears there is no common part which would fit all types of machine.

Hi Mike

I found this with my model 50 too, but it is correct. The exhaust bracket on a model 50 bolts through a hole a few inches in front of the passenger footpeg. The ES2 on the other hand does bolt through the footpeg. The downpipes are slightly different lengths too. I think they arealso different for widelines and slimlines because of the different passenger footrest mounting bracket. I have attached a picture if it helps.

Cheers

Hi Paul:

I see your photo and can see the mounting hole in the frame bracket you are talking about. I checked my '61 bike (matching numbers) and can state that there are no additional holes in the passenger peg mounting bracket as shown in your photo.

Can anyone else confirm that the muffler mounting hole is supposed to be there as per Pauls' photo?

I am really thinking that someone drilled the hole in the bracket to line up with the mounting holes in the mufflers

Thanks, Mike

Hi Mike.

I am certain the problem is your exhaust pipe. The pipe in the picture is the same length as my wideline ES2's. Thes/l models hadlonger pipes to compensate for the pillion footrests that are set further back on the s/l frame. Armours list different pipes for the two frames. It would've been much cheaper to leave 2 - 3 inches on a pipe than redesign the silencers. There was another type of silencer fitted on some slimeline models - a cylindrical design with concentric in & outlets as opposed to the familiaroffset type in the photo. I think Armours do this as well and may be able to help you regards the part numbers.

A longer exhaust pipe would make sense but.... I have a friend with a slimline ES2 that has the same problem with the muffler mounting.

Does the Club hold the original part drawings?

Hi Mike.

As I said Armours list a different pipe for the slimline, give them a ring and maybe they can give you the length (don't forget to take into account the insert that reduces the diameter to take the silencer). Some years ago I was sold a slimline pipe in error and had to take 2-3 inches off it. Armours (of Bounemouth) have a website here http://www.armoursltd.co.uk/or give them a ring.

Incidentally the 59 parts book lists the silencer as being the same for both R/H Dommi and ES2 and it is the same type as in Paul's photo.

Cheers.

Ian.
