Running in!

Forums

Hi all, What's the best way to run a 16H side valve engine in? I have heard conflicting views, and not sure what to do for the best. Cheers Tony.

Of course it depends... How tight is your bore clearance? That's really the major factor. A 16H isn't the most highly tuned bike on the planet, so you would have to try hard to damage it. So common sense applies. Don't let it get too hot, don't flog it hard in a high gear climbing a hill but let it run freely downhill. Leave off the prolonged full-bore top speed runs for a bit. Gradually use more throttle as the miles pile up. That's about it. I take it you are usind a good quality monograde oil. Don't forget to change it after a few hundred miles. Gordon.
