Resetting Smith odometer

I am restoring a basket case Commando and have purchased a used speedo. How do I set the odometer back to zero?  Do I simply use an electric drill on the cable and turn it backwards for days on end?
Thanks

If you are restoring,  then why not get the speedo and tacho 'restored' too? Just getting the mileage reset shouldn't cost too much more than a new bezel and glass to be fitted.

I have good experience with Stuart Walker (Mansfield) and Ashley Pople (Aldershot,) for this, Timeless motorcycles (was AA Gaggs) are also noted to be very good.

George

I agree with George on this, have also had Stuart Walker refurb a speedo and Tach for my 650SS. It is very likely your 60 year old speedo needs a service just based on it's age. Trying to reset it using a drill motor is a non starter and has it's bases in urban ledged. It would take hundreds of hours and probably 2 or 3 drill motors to attempt...........on a 60 year old speedo that needs a service!! I think Stuart charged me £100 for the rest and service of my speedo that now works perfectly.

If you have access to a lathe and can competently use it, you can easily make the tools to roll the bezel off and on (reusing said bezel) There is a book covering the subject of smiths magnetic speedo overhaul available.

Peter,
Please can you describe the tools and method for using a lathe to remove and replace the bezel.
This technique will be useful for replacing a broken glass or repainting the inside of the body to reflect more light for night riding.

I have neither a lathe nor the skills to use one.  Will look at getting them refurbished, but Brexit has made that difficult and expensive (I live in the EU).

The technique is outlined in the book 'Magnetic speedo repair' by Graham Blighe. I did it a bit differently using easier to make tools. Get a block of nylon/delrin or at a push a lump of hardwood. Face off and turn a recess the depth and diameter of the bezel. Hold the speedo/tacho body into the recess using the revolving center in the tailstock (you will have to find/make/adapt something to hold the body here, i used a cone cut off a megaphone, fits just nicely to press the body into the recess) now using a hook shaped tool ground up and well polished mounted in the tool post you can peel the bezel back to release the body. Dont do this under power, just pull the chuck around by hand. Once the inner-eds are sorted out remount the body glass bezel etc and use another tool ( i use a ball race mounted at center height) to roll the bezel back to grip the body (this is called metal spinning)  Takes longer to describe than to actually do the job.
