Replacing Con Rod Bolts

Forums

In order to check the crankshaft oilways are clean I took off the two con rods during my Navigator rebuild. My question is should I rebuild the con rods with new bolts and nuts or reuse the old ones. Maybe the bolts are OK but it needs new nuts - or the other way round.

I know that the easy answer is to use all newbut that is about £40 from the spares scheme including VAT and postage. I have read lots of articles in the past but that was always about racers or big twins that might be thrashed so my query is whether it is just so vital for an engine that is never going to be anywhere near its rev limits.

Any thoughts - and particularly past experience - will be very welcome.

I can only speak from my own experience in which case I have always re-used the original nuts/bolts PROVIDED they are in good serviceable condition. So over the past 25 or more years I can say that I have never experienced any trouble whatsoever from this source. The original nuts/bolts seem to be good quality high tensile items and probably of better quality than aftermarket replacements.

My JUBILEES/NAVIGATORS only receive light road use. BUT years ago when we raced an MGB and built our own race engines we re-used the nuts/bolts on regular strip downs - we always replaced shells and rings every time- and we never ever experienced any trouble either. It would be interesting though to hear other people's experience - maybe we were just lucky.

Thanks Patrick - that is exactly the type of experience I wanted to tap in to. I kind of thought it would be OK and lets just hope I will be as lucky as you have been.
