Hi, Following the manual I have unscrewed the locking ring around the clutch withdrawal
lever and withdrawn the clutch operating body complete with clutch operating ball. I then tried to engage
top gear but unfortunately had the plunger spring bolt for the camplate removed (silly me)
The gearbox now seems to be jammed and I can't select neutral.
My question... How important is it to select neutral before preceeding ? (I have removed the mainshaft nut) If its essential to select neutral how should I proceed?

Turning the back wheel or…
Turning the back wheel or the gearbox sprocket helps clearing jams when trying to change gear with the engine not running.

In answer to the original query, it doesn't make much if any difference when dismantling but I would always have it in neutral when reassembling.

Sounds like the Quadrant has travelled further that it usually does and it then can disengage with the camplate ,or the other way round!.I would just pull it apart .Can't see it makes any difference. The only tricky thing on assembly is timing the quadrant and camplate and I always finish up doing it anyway.
