rebore & crank grinding specialist required

Hi, can anyone recommend a high quality workshop for a rebore and crank regrind plus little end manufacture and fitting? I see three possibles listed in the Services page but I prefer to have a personal recommendation. I am on the west Sussex / Hants border but am happy to travel and take the parts to a good place. Thanks, John.

I use Owlsebury Crankshafts at Winchester, at the end of the A272, not cheap but first class re-bores, as they will check the bores for alignment to the barrel base and to each other instead of just following the existing hole. Never had crank re-ground, as I have not needed that service yet.

Worth making sure that the crank is de-burred after grinding and that the bores are plateu honed. mMakes a big difference to subsequent life.

Plateau honed???

That is a new term for me.

Can you please explain what type of a hone job that is?

Thanks

Mike

O.K. So this is how it goes,

1/Bore to size, great care needed to avoid waviness.

2/Course hone to give the cross hatch patern which acts as ' canals' for oil movement up and down thw bores under the influence of the pistons and rings..

3/ Plateau hone to remove the sharp peaks of the surface left by the honing. This reproduces the efffect of careful running in without damage to the rings and bores.

SiC hones are preferable to diamond asthey do not produce work hardening.

4/ clean goodcutting oil as lubricant is essential.

Hope that this helps.

I seem to remember the advice is then to wash with nail brush and soapy water to remove all traces of abrasive. Don't worry about flash corrosion. Wiping with rags and solvents until it appears to be clean is not good enough. Allegedly.

There is the Rebore Shop that is run by Tony Hartlen on the Hookstile Trading estate, inFarnham, Surrey and also does crankshaft regrinds. His number in the day is 01252 728270,and in the evening it is 01483 429310. I have used him for all my regrinds and rebore's for my Norton twins. He now works limited times during the week.

Two possible suppliers and a posh type of rebore, that's what I like about this type of forum, they're a mine of information :) . Thanks again guys.

HI Anna, many thanks for your responses, can you provide a little more detail on SEP? I googled SEP in Knebworth and didn't get anything useful. I have found Steve Maney, looks good but a little far for a first choice.

Cheers, John.
