Rear mudguard problem on '57 ES2

Forums

Hello, I am a new member and am halfway to restoring a 1957 ES2.

I bought what appeared to be a complete bike but in bits. The picture is in the gallery.

I can't seem to get the rear mudguard to fit. Its a two piece one and seems correct but the front section is waisted but does not fit through the swinging arm as it does on many british bikes. It also seems too long if it stays above the swinging arm.

My parts lists and manuals are no help with this as they do not show any detail.

Is anyone able to supply me with a photo or a diagram of how it is mounted? Better still are there any members in the West Yorkshire area with a similar complete bike that I can come and take pictures of.

Thanks

I have been in contact with Mike Pemberton and he has solved my problem. (Thanks Mike)

It seems thatI have a mudguard from a Featherbed model which fits through the wider swinging arm.

Has anyone got a pre-Featherbed one to swap - it seems a shame to butcher it up to fit.

Hi David,

I have a '57 model 77, & had the same problem with the rear fender I bought from the NOC. Come to find out, it the fenser was to be used on the pre featherbed models, the front of the fender needed to be shortened. I also had to notch the front of the fender for the chain guard. Where the front of your fender bolts to the frame lugs, you may want to add a piece of 1/8 steel across the width of the fender on the inside across the bolt holes & then drill through the original holes. This will give you some added strength thers, as they tend to crack in that area. Email me if you would like me to send you some pictures.
