Re: More problems

Forums
The primary chain has been rubbing the inner c.case on my '55 ES2 so I thought I'd have a look and see of a bigger offset drive sprocket would cure the prob. Guess what - the offset is already at max. I made it 0.465" so given operator error I'm taking that as 0.46" from open end of max diameter to inner edge of sprocket teeth. I attach a pic which shows that in fact the rubbing is occurring more to the rear of the case than the front. There is a tiny bit of play on the clutch sprocket but could the culprit be that the bike is fitted with a Mod 77 g/box (ref GB8) rather than an ES2 GT box. The wear all seems to be near or around the clutch sprocket. Any ideas would be gratefully accepted. Georgeps I'll attach pic when I figure how to reduce the kilobytes!!

Save the pic to photobucket (other providers are available!) and cut and paste the HTML link from photobucketinto the message after clickingthe HTML button above the text box .... simples!

My primary chain is also making too much noise and I'll be investigating that at the weekend, but I doubt its the gearbox, I think they are a straight swap, or so I was told!

hat's very ind of you Dan but it's all gobbledegook to me I'm afraid. Which HTML Lnk, which text box? I'm on a MacBook with an App called "Photos". We're going a bit off-topic here! If the gearboxes are interchangeable it can only be that the clutch sprocket is too close to the rear cover. How? Rear cover needs knocking back or clutch sprocket needs moving forwards? G

My 52, plunger ES2, came fitted with a model 77 gearbox with no clearance problems. Now fitted with the correct box. From memory, and without taking the primary chain cover off to have a look, I would say with the primary chain off I would be able to squeeze a finger in the gap between the inner cover and the clutch.

I've checked the chain measurement and it seems fine. 1/2" x 5/16" but I wonder if it is a cheapo and too thick (wide) overall? I'm getting about 0.57" (about 9/16") across the outside of the wider link. I've no idea what it should be but if it is too wide that would account for the interference with the casing. I've ordered a new Renolds so I'll see how that compares. I'll leave the casing alone for the time being.

Ok I'll try again, I use an iPad! You'll need to create a photobucket account, once you've done that you can upload a photo from your album on your Mac , once it's uploaded you can click on it in photobucket, when it loads you'll see a list of links on the right. Copy the link labelled HTML. Then come to this thread and click on the small HTML button that you can see above the box you type a message. Paste the link you have copied and save it, and Bob should be your uncle!

BTW - new Renolds has arrived (only ordered it yesterday!). As far as I can tell from a quick measure it's only 5 thou narrower across the rivets than the existing chain. Not sure that would cause the prob. I suspect (after temporarily fitting the new chain to check) that I'll have to remove the inner case and start tapping. G

Thanks for the pic Barry. Yes - I tried to check with an angle mirror but couldn't see. Just being lazy. I can see now that the clutch will have to come off and the inner c/case. Cheers George

George. Looking at your pic. which isn't too clear it looks as if the bottom nut is only partially engaged on the thread. If its tight it suggests the cover is too far out. John

Couldn't restrain myself, John. Popped into the garage whilst waiting for the TT to start and guess what! A washer behind each of the points you note! What is annoying is that I put them there to level out the case to help cure oil leaks - which they did. Doh! Tomorrow I'll put it all back together and report back. Many thanks to all for your various comments. Much appreciated. George

Ooops! BTW John - you were correct as well. The nut you pointed out was somewhat loose. Am I the right man for the job?? G

That's very kind of you, Jonathan. I've always figured that the only way to learn is to ask! George

BTW - new p/chain now fitted and Lo! No touching anywhere! BUT - despite reasonably slack p/chain and reasonably slack rear chain the gearbox has reverted to its old trick of not wishing to move out of the gear it's in. And neutral - forget it! George
