Re: 7 inch brake hubs

Forums

I wonder if anyone knows the answer to this.

I have a WD 16H nearing completion of rebuild. At some stage in it's long life it was fitted with long Roadholders making it look, superficially, like a post 1949 model, except for the lack of a cradle frame, and the fact that the steering stop bolts are at the wrong angle!

Anyway I was fairly happy with the Roadholders, rebuilt them and the front wheel, but have now acquired a pre war "donor" basket case, which has girders and correct front wheel, complete with speedo drive etc. I plan to put the girders on my rebuilt bike.

This is my question. Rather than rebuild the front wheel from the donor bike, will the 7 inch wheel that I have already rebuilt for the Roadholders, accept the internal speedo drive ring and older style 7 inch brake plate from my donor bike?

Has anyone heard of this being done?

I can't use the brake plate from the rebuilt wheel, it is aluminium, without the hole for the front wheel speedo drive, and is designed to work as a leading shoe on the RHS rather than the LHS as with the girders.

Hope this question isn't too waffly, I'm sure anyone in the know will understand what I mean.

Cheers,

Paul

Paul, If you turn your single leading shoe brake round, itis still single leading shoe, and will even out the wear on the shoes as well.Drilling a hole for the speedo drive woulnt be difficult as you have the other plate to take dimensions from. You may have to spot face the mount point for the drive to keep it square with the hub gear. You will also need a spacer or sleeve to fit the gear to the hub. Shouldnt be too difficult, just make a light pressfit or use loctite.

Thanks John, most useful.

I will cost up having a sleeve turned out, (I don't have my own lathe yet), and consider the other machining myself.

I have to say that since posting I am coming round to the idea of rebuilding the front wheel from the donor bike anyway, the idea was to return to original, so perhaps I shouldn't skimp on a single wheel. :o)

Paul, I think that if you dont have any equipt. the whole change would be costly and difficult. You still need to consider modifying the axle to mount in the girders, spacers, collars and threading would be required. As an engineer, I would refuse such a job due to legal liability concerns or worse if the thing malfunctioned. I have recently fitted a BSA A10 8in brake wheel into a set of Matchless girders for a fellow building a custom from a pre war 990 V twin.Imade a whole new axle from 4140, and altered the forks . All quite time consuming, better to stick with the original.
